Catapulted to stardom

‘What I like about Richard Mille is the idea of bringing together the ‘friends of the brand’. It’s like a team. Some are sportspeople, others are not. There are also artists and actors. I love this vision. It’s almost as if I’ve joined a new family.’

Yuliya Levchenko was already catapulted at an early age to being the World Number 2 in Women’s high jump. For the young Ukrainian there’s only one way to go, however – up ! Yuliya is pole-vaulting her way to being the next big thing in female athletics. Blessed with a breathtaking physique, exceptional athletic abilities and a dazzling personality, Yuliya is a Richard Mille partner since 2018 and on the field, like many of the brand’s women competitors, she wears an RM 07-01 Automatic in Carbon TPT®.

Richard Mille relishes working with such high-performance athletes. The very personal relationship with the brand’s partners, which expresses itself in constantly pushing the limits of watchmaking, is reinforced by a shared desire for ever greater performance. High jump especially requires absolute precision, perfect technique, and a superlative power-to-weight ratio.

Born in Kiev, Yuliya trains indefatigably to become the best. Her progress has certainly been quick – it takes most women jumpers 15 years to reach 2 meters, Yuliya crossed it in just 7. She went from clearing 1.70m to a performance of 2.01m at the latest World Championships in London. At just 20 years old the lithe Slav-whose beauty is exceeded only by her performance on the track-is already shattering expectations. She was named Ukraine’s Best Female Athlete of 2017.

‘I immediately gravitated towards the high jump, most likely because of my height and build (currently 60 kg and 1.79 m). I was already tall for my age at 13, and very slender. From the very beginning, I absolutely loved the high jump. It was like a game for me: trying to put the bar higher and higher without knocking it off, and starting again without ever focusing on the element of performance. It was sheer enjoyment.’
